Pilates For Dancers

As a former professional dancer, I’m delighted to see how widely Pilates is now recognised as an essential training tool within the dance world. Many leading dance schools and top international companies employ qualified Pilates teachers to support their dancers’ strength, technique, and longevity.

Pilates is often described by professional dancers as a “secret weapon”—and it certainly was for me. It develops strength, control, alignment, and body awareness in a way that perfectly complements dance training.

I am a young dancer - what can it do for me?

Regular Pilates practice can be hugely beneficial for young dancers, particularly in developing core strength, which is vital in every ballet movement. These muscles should be active throughout class, and Pilates teaches your body how to properly engage and “switch on” this support system.

A strong centre is essential for:

  • Good posture and placement

  • Balance, turns, and control

  • Jumps and safe landings

  • Pointe work and stability

As you practise Pilates, you may discover muscles you didn’t even know you had! Over time, you’ll begin to recognise and use these muscles during dance steps, allowing you to move with greater control, confidence, and range of motion.
